A family story
For three generations, the same family has maintained in its keeping the Château de Brague vines, supervising with family care and attention the elaboration of the wine their grapes produce. The grandfather Maurice Trève, inventor and industrialist in railway equipment, purchased the property in 1936 consecrating all his leisure time to its development. His son-in-law, , agronomist and industrialist in founding, followed by his daughter Hélène, continued his work, modernising and adapting techniques to the evolution of oenology and wine growing. His grand daughters, Noèle, architect and Cécile, wardrobemistress, continue this work started over 70 years ago, with constant vigilance regarding the quality of their wine and respect for the environment.
A rich and homogenious soil
The Château de Brague at Vérac, a site inhabited since prehistoric times, is situated 3 kilometres from the Dordogne in the vicinity of Fronsac. The property consists of 35 hectares of land in one piece, composed of a limestone plateau dipping towards a wooded, well drained lower area containing a higher degree of clay. This formation called cuesta, creates an excellent soil where the Château de Brague was built in the 17th Century. The vines are densely planted (6 000 plants/hectare) and have an average age of 20 years. It is the old vines that transmit the soil’s optimal expression to the wine.
An attentive vinification
The encepagement of Château de Brague favours a preponderance of Merlot (60%) followed by Cabernet-Sauvignon (30%) and Cabernet-Franc (10%). The grapes are picked at maximum phenolic maturity, by variety and by lot, after tasting hand sorting. The vinification employs the traditional rules, with carbonic snow to protect the grapes, prefermentation maceration, post-fermentation maceration followed by a long period in vats. The wine is stored in cement vats over a minimum period of one year for the cuvée classique (classical wine) and in vats of French oak for the cuvées spéciales (special wines) le Plantier de la Reine and l’Étoile. After this period of great care and attention, the Chateau de Brague reveals all the qualities of its soil, with a perfect balance between the freshness of its aroma and the mature complexity of its bouquet.
