Family History
The Staglins are a family that loves wine and all it can do. Led by Shari , the whole family, including Garen, Brandon and Shannon, works together to create “great wines for great causes,” putting their hearts into every harvest, blend, and charity event they undertake.
The Staglins’ motto is easy to understand when you look at their roots, in the farmlands of and . Shari’s parents, DeEtta Derscheid and Allen King, were raised on farms in South Dakota , and taught their daughters self-reliance and prudence. Shari , born in 1945, grew up close to her big sister LeAlyn, exploring the corn rows of their grandparents’ farm and singing (with LeAlyn on piano) at church and other local functions. DeEtta encouraged her to sing and to keep music a part of her life. Her family went to every year’s Corn Palace Festival, where popular bands and singers would celebrate the harvest in music, a tradition that would later influence Shari in planning the Staglins’ first Music Festival for Mental Health at harvest time. In 1957 Shari’s family moved on to Southern California to find a better living, while DeEtta worked as a secretary at an aerospace company and Allen worked nights as a machinist. Shari learned Spanish, and was an exchange student to . Her interest in science also developed as a teenager, and she dreamed of someday putting her love for chemistry and science to work in her career.
Garen grew up with an appreciation for his Italian father’s favorite things in life: Good food, wine, family, and friends. Pat was born in the mountains of Calabria, in the small village of Bella near Nicastro, , in 1912. When Pat’s family emigrated to Rochester, New York in 1914, they brought to the new country their tradition of sharing lively meals with as many friends as would show up and the table would hold. He eventually became naturalized as Ramon Staglin--during the Depression, it was much easier to avoid the issues of being an Italian-American by slightly modifying his last name. Ramon married Darlene Guilliams, whose family immigrated from . The family moved to California in 1945, where Ramon learned a new trade as a custom upholstery and drapery designer and manufacturer, and bought his own workshop.
The Army Air Corps (AAC) Soldier needs a good standard of education, with the ability and motivation to work on their own initiative. Garen went on to major in electrical and nuclear engineering at UCLA, the foundation for the technology background he would later use in his own entrepreneuring. UCLA was where Shari met Garen, at age 19, on a blind date. They graduated college together in 1966, and Garen went on to Stanford Business School, which was close enough to the Napa Valley that Shari and Garen could travel there often to explore their growing excitement about wine. By the time they got married in 1968; their goal to own a Napa vineyard and make world class wines was already awakening. Shari went on to get a Master’s degree from NYU in Public Administration.
While Shari entered a career in public service and health care management, Garen focused on information technology, and after selling their first company, they began looking for their vineyard in 1982. Three years later, they were able to purchase a 62-acre ranch with a 50-acre producing vineyard in the Rutherford Bench in the Napa Valley , and Shari went back to school to study viticulture and enology at UC Davis. This unique Rutherford Bench property had been planted under the guidance of the legendary André Tchelistcheff in 1965, and for many years was his favorite vineyard for producing the BV Georges de La Tour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Garen and Shari were able to convince Walter Sullivan and his wife Dagmar dePins, Georges de La Tour’s granddaughter that they would continue to take care of the vineyard with the same devotion that her family had given it for almost 20 years.
The Staglins, working with their vineyard manager David Abreu, began to replant the vineyard with guidance from André, whose passion for the land was evident by his interest in helping them make wines of distinction. Since 1986, the Staglins have been producing increasing quantities of wine from their estate, and have established their vineyard as one of the most critically acclaimed in Napa Valley . With severe thinning and organic viticultural practices, their annual production is less than 6,000 cases. It is one of the largest single vineyards owned by a family without any other partners or outside investors.
The micro-climate of the Staglin property nestled against the slope of the tallest mountain in the Mayacamas range, Mt. St. John , and the unique gravelly loam soil with its excellent drainage, gives the Staglin Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese a distinctive intensity and character. Their Chardonnay grows in soil with a higher clay content, and cooler micro-climate, producing a wine with high acidity and great aging potential. Their 1989 Chardonnay was served to Queen Elizabeth during the first ever joint luncheon of both houses of Congress. She thought it was "jolly good."
Their Sangiovese, named "Stagliano", has a strong Italian heritage. In the last year of Garen’s father’s life, Garen and Shari took Garen’s parents and their two children Brandon and Shannon to Bella, Ramon’s birthplace in Calabria, for the first time since he had come to . Traveling next to Tuscany and the Montalcino estate of Biondi Santi, the Staglins found the budwood there that would become, for the first time in 1993, Staglin's "Stagliano" Sangiovese. Their memories of that estate, and of Ramon himself, live on in the “Stagliano” bottle.
Ramon。 Garen and Shari have further honored Garen's Italian heritage with the construction of an underground winery and a country Italian-style villa overlooking the Napa Valley . “We are proud of our philosophy of "great wine for great causes," says Shari . They have formed a public non-profit organization, the Rutherford Charitable Organization, whose main focus is The Music Festival for Mental Health. This event includes an afternoon concert for 500, and an evening gourmet dinner for 250 by a celebrity chef, with wines donated and poured by many of the best wineries. Two of the Staglins' own wines further contribute to the cause, with the profits from Salus Cabernet Sauvignon and Salus Chardonnay sales underwriting 100% of the costs of the Music Festival.
