
The credit of Chateau Rayas goes to Jacques Reynaud and his father, Louis. Jacques Reynaud is the brilliant, unassuming genius behind these wines, which are made from low yields from some of the oldest vines in the southern Rhône Valley.
Château Rayas is the antithesis of modern-day winemaking. No stainless steel, no temperature controls, no new oak, and no oenologists are to be found in the Rayas cellar.
Behind Jacques’ decidedly antifame, anti-twentieth century facade is an extremely well-read gentleman with exceptional knowledge and a love of many things, including fine food. Château Rayas is a beautiful wine crystallized from not merely winemaking skills, but Reynaud family’s great tradition and wisdom passed on for generations.

The Reynaud family's ownership of Château de Fonsalette began in 1945. The Fonsalette Côtes du Rhône (a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah) outshines many Châteauneuf du Papes and can be one of the great examples of the southern Rhône Valley.
After the Côtes du Rhône blend is made, Reynaud utilizes the remaining Syrah (from an 8.6-acre vineyard) to produce one of the treasures of the Rhône Valley, the Fonsalette Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Syrah. They have more in common with a great Hermitage than a southern Rhône Syrah. Fonsalette's Cuvée Syrahs often require 20+ years of cellaring.
